Since the sudden death of one of his favorite students, high school teacher Larry Morrow has been falling asleep at his desk and dreaming. The school’s guidance counselor is hanging inspirational posters designed to help everyone "process their emotions." The boy’s sister and friends, disinterested in Dante, are more agitated and hormonal than usual. And as Larry’s dreams intensify, a shocking secret is exposed. A secret that will change everything.

Reed Birney is quickly becoming New York’s foremost actor in a particular subspecialty, communicating the grief of average men facing extraordinary loss. Mr. Birney’s performance in “The Dream of the Burning Boy,” an eloquent, affecting new play by the newcomer David West Read at the Roundabout Underground’s Black Box Theater, is the third he’s given this season Off Broadway, a feat in itself deserving of some sort of badge of honor, given the size of the paychecks.
