Here’s an equation for fans of theatrical problem solving: What happens when you multiply two men by four hats? The answer, it would seem, is infinite possibilities for confusion, consternation and resolution. If you question my math, then check out the high-spirited traveling production of “The Comedy of Errors” that has come to rest at the Public Theater. Well, “come to rest” is perhaps not the best phrase for a show that never, ever stands still. The latest offering from the Public’s Mobile Shakespeare Unit, this streamlined 90-minute interpretation of Shakespeare’s early comedy of identical twins on the loose has spent three weeks touring prisons, homeless shelters and community centers in New York City. The troupe’s mandate is to bring theater to audiences who, for whatever reasons, cannot make it to the theater.
