Rated P for Parenthood chronicles every stage of modern-day parenting, from conception to college, with giant doses of heart and humor. Early on there’s the birth of a baby, with doctor, nurse and father-to-be all singing, “Push it out, push it on out” like a high school football cheer. Vaginas are mentioned so often that you may wish Eve Ensler had never made the word fashionable in polite company. Then, just as you’re writing off “Rated P for Parenthood” as a bad, demographically opportunistic mash-up, a new mother sings a lovely middle-of-the-night lullaby to her infant son, and her husband offers her $50 to take his turn getting out of bed to tend to the baby. (She negotiates and gets $100 and “coffee from the fancy place.”)

The first sketch in "Rated P for Parenthood" — one of those small-scale, audience-friendly, ninety-minute Off Broadway revues formulated with an eye to sitdown engagements across the land — features a new mother who has mass e-mailed a birth-photo that includes a clear shot of, and I quote, "her hoo-ha." One can imagine regional theaters full of older auds screaming with laughter at talk of "hoo-has" and "daddy doing pushups on mommy’s stomach." Whether they will sustain a show at Gotham’s Westside Theater is another question.

Despite what Paula Deen says, there is such a thing as too sweet. But the creators of “Rated P for Parenthood” didn’t get the memo, and their musical could send unsuspecting audiences into a sugar crash.

This is a new musical comedy revue based at the Westside Theatre. It’s the zany story that takes place in life from conception and birth (“Push It on Out”), to watching the little one grow up through the various stages of childhood; the love and joy, hopes and dreams, the wacky grandparents (not so wacky after all), divorce, prom nite, and finally going off to college. Some of the vignettes and songs are funny and clever, others are trite and dreary (moan, moan). The four actors who play all the roles, changing position from children to parents to grandparents, a gay couple with 3 sons (they can’t help it if they’re straight), are all wonderfully talented with good solid vocals.

Every parent has a story to tell, and the Internet offers the perfect platform for sharing the woes of raising children. However, having a child doesn’t automatically provide creative fodder for a book, a blog, or even a musical revue.

Unless you’ve got a brat (sorry, child) of your own, there’s little reason to see this comedic musical revue. But for moms and dads who’ve preferably had a cocktail or three before curtain, Rated P for Parenthood is a mildly pleasant surprise, like when your straight-C student somehow scores a B on a midterm.
