Our Town (Green-Wood Cemetery)
Opening Night: June 11, 2014
Closing: June 28, 2014
Theater: Green-Wood Cemetery
Enjoy a classic piece of American theater amidst the timeless beauty of Green-Wood Cemetery. Our Town tells the story of Emily Webb and George Gibbs of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, a small New England town at the turn of the twentieth century. But the lessons of Grover’s Corners stretch far beyond the sleepy town, as the play explores the universal human experiences of life, love, marriage, death and dying. And while the play stays true to universal themes of Wilder’s world-renowned work, Green-Wood’s Our Town is distinctly Brooklyn – the cast is diverse, the music is modern, and the vibe is decidedly urban.

Given Thornton Wilder’s specification that Our Town be presented in minimalist fashion, you wonder what he would have made of Brooklyn’s majestic Green-Wood Cemetery as a theatrical setting. There is no curtain, of course, in this presentation by the Green-Wood Historic Fund of Wilder’s drama, only the wind rushing through the tall trees and the jets streaking overhead and the glittering spires of Manhattan in the distance. It doesn’t get more urban Americana than this. Though the weather was intensely chilly for Saturday evening’s performance, it was also gorgeous. It’s easy to forget how striking this cemetery is, and how quickly the congestion of the city recedes once you make your way onto its 478 acres.
