Metamorphoses
Opening Night: March 4, 2002
Closing: February 16, 2003
Theater: Circle in the Square
Mary Zimmerman’s mesmerizing play about the power of love to transform recently celebrated its 300th performance. This unique mix of dance, music, comedy, and tragedy breathes new life into the legend of King Midas and the tales of Cupid, Psyche, Aphrodite, and Orpheus. Based on the epic works of Ovid, Metamorphoses converts the Circle in the Square into a 27-foot-wide pool of water and beautifully channels the stories of gods and goddesses into a breathtaking evening.

The images snag on the edges of thought, stirring up fragments of half-remembered dreams. A door opens to reveal a dead lover, alive again and yet not quite the same. A man looks over his shoulder and fails to see the familiar face he was sure was behind him. A warm body dissolves in mid-embrace into water.
