Korach follows the history of anarchists who have been wiped out because they frightened the government. Inspired by the Books of Moses, the Jewish Mishnas, and also the Psalms, Korach begins with the Israelites’ trek through the desert and eventual uprising against Moses, lead by Korach and his tribe. Using live action and film, the play also looks at anarchists in Spain circa 1939, Russia circa 1921, and modern day. Korach is about the necessity of any state to eliminate dissident elements within it if it is to survive – and the responsibility of revolutionaries to present their ideas in a way as to not incite violence.

“Korach,” an ambitious but flawed parable by the legendary downtown impresario Judith Malina, explores the travails of anarchists over the millenniums. “We will lose every battle except the last one,” announces Emma Goldman in one of the play’s time-hopping video re-enactments.

It’s worth admiring Judith Malina’s commitment to radical anarchism. In a time when socialists and communists are getting all the negative attention, Malina remains oblivious to political fashion and is committed against all odds to a total transformation of the sociopolitical sphere. More incredibly, she’s going to get us there through theater. She’s a one-of-a-kind Pollyanna, waving the revolutionary flag on the way to blocking rehearsal.
