The fairy tale forest of “Into the Woods” has suddenly grown a lot thicker. This 1987 musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, which stirs up the shadows of classic bedtime stories, was never what you’d call uncrowded. But Timothy Sheader’s overreaching revival, which opened on Thursday night at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, has added a whole new bramble of interpretive undergrowth.

The Public Theater’s outdoor revival of "Into the Woods" is a fine idea—on paper. Where better to mount Stephen Sondheim’s fractured-fairy-tale musical than in Central Park’s tree-lined amphitheater? What’s more, some aspects of this production, which was jointly directed by Timothy Sheader and Liam Steel and is based on a 2010 revival that they created for London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, live up to the promise of its conception. Donna Murphy and Jessie Mueller, for instance, are terrific, and the "Midsummer Night’s Dream"-style set, designed by John Lee Beatty in collaboration with Soutra Gilmour, makes imaginative use of the Delacorte Theater’s natural surroundings. If only the sparkle-free, visually unfocused staging looked half so good. It’s hard to imagine a production of "Into the Woods" going flat, but that’s what this one does.

Cracked fairy tales are all the rage right now, aren’t they? There’s "Once Upon a Time" on ABC, "Grimm" on NBC and "Snow White and the Huntsman" at the movie theaters. So it’s nice to welcome back one of the first in the genre — "Into the Woods."

Set deep in the bowers of New York’s Central Park, the Public Theater’s radiant production of Into the Woods prepares lucky ticket-holders for an enchanted experience even before the first fairytale character appears on stage. We, too, must journey into the woods to arrive at one of the magical theater destinations of New York City, the open-air Delacorte Theater, now celebrating its 50th anniversary as home to Shakespeare in the Park. The path is safe, the air is soft (okay, hot), the sun is setting, the park is thronged. Moreover, the tickets are free — and simultaneously as precious as Jack’s magic beans.
