Hair: Summer of Love 2011
Opening Night: July 13, 2011
Closing: September 10, 2011
Theater: St James Theatre
Hair’s triumphant return to Broadway follows on the heels of its successful first national tour of 20 cities in 9 months during the 2010-2011 season and will feature original revival cast members Steel Burkhardt as Berger, Paris Remillard as Claude, Matt DeAngelis as Woof, Kaitlin Kiyan as Crissy, Darius Nichols as Hud, Kacie Sheik as Jeanie, London cast member Phyre Hawkins as Dionne and Central Park cast member Caren Lyn Tackett as Sheila. With a score including musical numbers as "Let the Sun Shine In," "Aquarius," "Hair" and "Good Morning Starshine," Hair follows a group of hopeful, free-spirited young people who advocate a lifestyle of pacifism and free-love in a society riddled with intolerance and brutality during the Vietnam War. As they explore sexual identity, challenge racism, experiment with drugs and burn draft cards, the "tribe" in Hair creates an irresistible message of ‘hope’ that continues to resonate with audiences 40 years later.

The kind of social networking taking place between actors and audience at the St. James Theater, where the recent Broadway revival of “Hair” has splashed down for a welcome return visit this summer, doesn’t require any fancy digital gadgets.

Even on my fifth viewing, Diane Paulus’ extraordinary handling of Hair, the landmark 1967 musical, now playing at the St. James Theatre, impresses. Her thoughtful staging simultaneously retains its political and social relevance, while remaining an ultimately heartbreaking yet joyful piece of theater. And once again, a extremely talented "tribe" of performers — some admittedly better cast than others — are bringing this always-welcome show to life.

Anyone who has not yet seen the Public Theater’s Tony-winning revival of the 1967 rock musical "Hair" is absolutely urged to buy tickets. Diane Paulus’ exuberant and physical production brilliantly evokes the passion of youths rebelling against the Vietnam War and a conformist and uncaring society.

What "The Nutcracker" is to December, "Hair" is to July. Not only does the musical take place during the Summer of Love, but its "turn on, tune in, drop out" message feels particularly right when the temperature hits the 90s and everybody mellows.

Call it a comeback. Or a regrowth. Either way, the Tony-winning revival of "Hair" is back on Broadway. As someone who doesn’t tire of hearing its great songs, including the joyful "Aquarius," plaintive "Where Do I Go?" and giddy-goofy "Good Morning Starshine," I’m extending a warm welcome.
