Christina Masciotti, author of Time Out New York’s 2010 Top Ten Play Vision Disturbance, returns to the Abrons to premiere her latest work, Adult, the story of a deadbeat dad who attempts to salvage a relationship with his estranged 18-year-old daughter. He invites her to spend her first winter break from college with him in his recently burglarized row house that doubles as his gun shop. She accepts his invitation, but underneath the gloss of hope that their relationship might be repaired, all the issues that have kept them apart come roiling to the surface.

Christina Masciotti treats her characters with a kindness and patience that are usually accorded to only the very young or the very old. Take the middle-age father and adolescent daughter who make up the entire cast of Adult, Ms. Masciotti’s gentle new comedy at the Abrons Arts Center. Self-centered and shortsighted in ways common to their ages and relationship, Stanley (Jimmie James) and Tara (Betsy Hogg) would seem to be types that might be found on television many times a week, setting off bursts of canned chuckles. They’re the kind of relatives who are always yelling across the generation gap and getting on each other’s nerves by make grand pronouncements on subjects they know nothing about.
