"Jack shall have Jill; Naught shall go ill" promises Puck, the hobgoblin of the night, and how can things be anything but grand when Tony Award-winner Bebe Neuwirth plays Titania, the queen of the fairies, in Shakespeare’s immortal comic romp that continues to enchant audiences of all ages.

A shower of rose petals descending on a carpet of black wood shavings provides one of the many visual allurements in the Classic Stage Company’s production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The tilted mirrored wall rising at the back of the theater — like a humongous disco ball squashed flat — reflects the flurrying downfall back to the audience, amplifying the magical feeling of being caught up in the eye of a hot-pink hurricane.

This production of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” looks real good. And not just because the cast includes Christina Ricci, Bebe Neuwirth and at least two guys who can’t act but have spectacular chests.

"Lord, what fools these mortals be!" "Very true, Puck. But my, how buff and toned they are, too. Get me the number of their trainer!" OK, we’re taking a bit of liberty with Shakespeare’s dialogue here. Oberon, king of the fairies, doesn’t make that precise comment as he observes the four amorously confused lovers of "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" duke it out in the freewheeling and highly entertaining new production at the Classic Stage Company that opened Sunday.

Sitting in beach chairs, two men — one in a pink elephant costume, the other dressed like a sci-fi rock god — eat popcorn while two half-naked women claw at each other from perches on the backs of their shirtless suitors. It’s not an image that quickly brings the word Shakespearean to mind. And judging by the number of similarly gonzo moments in this Off Broadway production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Classic Stage Company (running through May 20), that’s exactly the point.
