The Flux Theater Ensemble makes the most of a modest stage in its production of August Schulenburg’s new play, “Salvage,” at the Loisaida Center in the East Village. The show, a somewhat meandering science-fiction character study with poetic leanings, capitalizes on a large room at the center, outfitting it (Will Lowry did the scene design) to suggest a bunker in a postapocalyptic Manhattan. Entering this desolate outpost in a hazmat suit is Noma (Sol Crespo), a onetime actress, who joins Akiko (Rachael Hip-Flores), a former elementary-school teacher. Both are “searchers,” employees of an organization that scours Manhattan for precious possessions lost in a viral-warfare fallout (“the tox”). The two are a study in contrasts, Noma’s playful good-time girl at odds with Akiko’s steady, cautious disposition. In private, Akiko dictates an audiotape journal of her observations, directed at a mysterious recipient.
