Naked Angels presents the world premiere of Geoffrey Nauffts’ new play Next Fall (formerly titled The Gospel According To Adam), directed by Sheryl Kaller. The play is the winner of the Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation’s 2008 Theatre Visions Fund award.

A gay man being forced to deal with the homophobic parents of his devoutly Christian partner is the subject of Geoffrey Naufft’s Next Fall, currently being presented by Naked Angels at Playwrights Horizon’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater under Sheryl Kaller’s direction. Despite some emotionally potent moments in its second act, the play’s effectiveness is limited by its tendency toward superficial, sitcom-ready dialogue and not especially convincing situations.

With its romantic story of two gay lovers whose idyllic relationship is threatened by one partner’s atheism and the other’s imminent death, "Next Fall" keeps threatening to fall into TV-weeper territory. But every time Geoffrey Nauffts’ bittersweet drama heads for that slippery slope, scribe pulls it right back with some painful illustration of the social constraints and political injustices that can drive even the most loving couples apart. Provided they can count on mounting a production as slickly professional as the one helmed here by Sheryl Kaller for Naked Angels, gay-friendly venues should put this one on the repertory.

The summer is not usually a great time to catch a play: After a frantic rush to the season’s finish line in early May, Broadway and Off Broadway tend to collapse into prolonged estivation. Happily, there are exceptions to this doziness. You needn’t wait until the coming autumn, for example, to catch Next Fall, Geoffrey Nauffts’s funny, romantic, truthful and heartbreaking new drama. You really needn’t wait at all, in fact: This beautifully shaped piece, produced by Naked Angels, should ideally be seen right away.
