The Last Five Years
Opening Night: April 2, 2013
Closing: May 18, 2013
Theater: Second Stage Theatre
Jason Robert Brown’s contemporary musical The Last Five Years tells the emotionally powerful story of two twenty-something New Yorkers who dive head first into a marriage fueled by the optimism that comes with finding “the one.” But in a city where professional and personal passions collide and only the strongest relationships survive, navigating the waters of love and matrimony can sometimes prove too much. Funny, honest and intimate, with an exuberantly romantic score, The Last Five Years takes a bold look at one young couple’s hope that love endures the test of time.

In the more than 10 years since “The Last Five Years” was first produced, this two-character musical by Jason Robert Brown about the life and death of young love has been embraced by new generations of musical-theater lovers. Watching the revival that opened at Second Stage Theater on Tuesday night, I fancifully imagined I could hear all the fans in the audience singing along in their heads. They greeted almost every number with fervent applause, as if each were the guest of honor arriving at a birthday party.
