The Beauty Queen of Leenane
Opening Night: January 11, 2017
Closing: February 5, 2017
Theater: BAM Harvey Theater
Ireland’s esteemed theater company Druid makes its BAM debut with this 20th anniversary revival of Martin McDonagh’s Tony Award-winning pitch-black comedy, the first in his trilogy of plays set in the sodden Irish backwater of Leenane. Forty-year-old spinster Maureen Folan lives with her mother Mag in a dreamless hovel, where the two trade insults and injuries in a vicious cycle of loveless caretaking—until a glimmer of romance for Maureen sets in motion a chain of events as hilarious as it is terrifying. Druid co-founder Marie Mullen, who won a Tony for her performance as Maureen in the original production, ages into the fearsome role of Mag, under the direction of co-founder and artistic director Garry Hynes.

The world has opened up for the poisonously insular mother and daughter of Martin McDonagh’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane, which has been given an expansive revival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. For starters, the rural Irish digs shared by Mag and Maureen Folan, one of the nastiest family units ever to grace (or disgrace) a stage, are larger than when this satanically funny pair first arrived in New York nearly two decades ago.
