Richard III at the Public Theater
Opening Night: August 7, 2012
Closing: August 26, 2012
Theater: Public Theater
One of Shakespeare’s most charismatic villains cuts a scorched-earth swath through the politicos, power-mongers, and even family members who stand between him and the crown. But before King Richard III can enjoy the fruits of his ill-gotten gain, something stirs that freezes him in his tracks: conscience. Shakespeare’s bracingly theatrical, surprisingly moral exploration of violence and its consequences is a production of The Public Theater’s Mobile Shakespeare Unit.

No character in Shakespeare is as hungry for power as Richard III. And it’s hard to think of an actor with a naturally hungrier look than Ron Cephas Jones, the tall, beanpole-thin, snakelike actor who portrays the title character in the production of “Richard III” from the Public Theater’s new Mobile Shakespeare Unit. This scaled-down staging has been presented at prisons, homeless shelters and other sites in underserved neighborhoods before returning to the company’s home base on Astor Place.
