Even as the U.S. Supreme Court debates what is marriage, the sentimental and hugely enjoyable new Broadway musical ‘Kinky Boots’ is debating the nature of manhood, with a fabulous twist. But as timely as this show suddenly seems to be — it posits an ideal world according to Harvey Fierstein, wherein struggle leads to self-acceptance, which leads in turn to public triumph — there’s nothing whatsoever that’s time-bound about Cyndi Lauper’s cheerfully audacious, toe-tapping score.

Cyndi Lauper knows how to work a crowd. Making her Broadway debut as a composer with ‘Kinky Boots,’ the new musical that opened on Thursday night at the Al Hirschfeld Theater, this storied singer has created a love- and heat-seeking score that performs like a pop star on Ecstasy. Try to resist if you must. But for at least the first act of this tale of lost souls in the shoe business, you might as well just give it up to the audience-hugging charisma of her songs.

‘Kinky Boots’ has flash and sparkle, some great dancing from director-choreographer Jerry Mitchell and a, well, fabulous star-turn by Porter as a female impersonator who discovers a more mainstream, not to mention profitable, calling.

The kicky crowd-pleaser Kinky Boots is the very model of a modern major musical. Adapted from a 2005 English indie film, Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper’s fizzy pop tuner tells of Charlie (the capable Sands) and his Northampton footwear factory, Price & Son—a family business in danger of closing down.

Toward the end of Act One of Kinky Boots (* * * out of four), the marvelous Billy Porter, playing a cross-dressing man who calls himself Lola, does something almost revolutionary for a contemporary Broadway musical.
