The high-stakes world of competitive cheerleading meets the cutthroat rivalries of high school politics and romance in this bold and explosive new musical comedy. Bring It On: The Musical comes to life through the talents of Broadway’s brightest young creators. With an original book by Tony Award®-winner Jeff Whitty (Avenue Q), music and lyrics by Tony® Award-winning composer Lin-Manuel Miranda (In The Heights), music by Pulitzer and Tony® Award-winning composer Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) and lyrics by Broadway lyricist Amanda Green (High Fidelity), this wholly original new musical is directed and choreographed by Tony® Award winner Andy Blankenbuehler (In The Heights).

The jubilant young dancers in the new musical “Bring It On,” at the Ahmanson Theater here, should probably be racking up frequent-flier miles, so often are they airborne in this featherweight show about competing high school cheerleading squads.

Boisterous, obvious, stylistically confused and not-ready-for-Broadway, “Bring It On: The Musical” nevertheless makes competitive cheerleading seem like the most natural subject in the world for a traveling musical blockbuster.

Within the cycle of film to stage projects few have been really meritorious. One of the more appealing stories about an underdog is the exception Legally Blonde. It’s far from perfect but its look at women’s issues with charm, savvy, and good-natured fun pleases a wide cross section. Now from the musical team Lin-Manuel Miranda of In the Heights and Tom Kitt of Next to Normal fame comes Bring It On.

"Bring It On," the new musical that began its national tour last weekend at the Ahmanson Theatre, is the biggest example so far of the Glee Effect.

I have seen shows which left me elated. I have seen shows which left me pondering a message. I have seen shows which left me humming tunes for weeks. I’ve rarely seen one which left me exhausted. At the end of "Bring it On!" just opened at the Ahmanson Theatre, that was me.

The Alliance Theatre at the Woodruff Arts Center has world premiered some of the most commercially successful musicals recently, including Sister Act: The Musical and The Color Purple. However, when announced for the 2010-2011 season, Bring It On: The Musical, by its title alone, meets with considerable skepticism. The original film version spawned a couplet of repeat, formulaic versions (both straight to DVD, if I recall accurately). What on Earth could be anticipated from a musical version of the cheerleading frenzied films? And why on Earth at 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award Recipient the Alliance Theater’s mainstage?

Just watch: They’ll take the show all the way, all the way. Just watch: It’s gonna rock Broadway, Broadway. With apologies to the superstar writers behind "Bring It On: The Musical,” the cliché-busting cheerleader spectacle now running at the Alliance Theatre, that’s just a lame-o way of saying: You’ve landed it.

"This is like everything I love in one place," said the woman behind me at the Alliance Theatre’s opening night of Bring It On: The Musical. "It’s like a combination of Save the Last Dance, Bring It On and this movie I saw on TV last week: There’s Something About Eve? All About Eve?"

As I walked out of the theatre at the sold-out opening night of Alliance Theatre’s new knockout show “Bring It On: The Musical,” my companion said, “It’s like we’re walking out into the middle of Times Square,” and I agreed. The buzz of excitement was so strong, the smiles of satisfied patrons so broad, and the tumult in the Arts Center lobby was so electric that it did indeed remind me of leaving a great hit show in the Big Apple.

Don’t hate them because they’re beautiful. Or because they’re bitchy, conniving and too full of their own youthful coolness for their own good. Instead, love them for all that, and because the creative team of “Bring It On: The Musical” has pulled off the improbable task of turning a mediocre cheerleader movie into a dynamic new musical that bristles with talent and potential.
