Making a musical out of A Christmas Story must have hardly seemed like work to Joseph Robinette, the book writer, and Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who provided the music and lyrics. How easy was it? When the second-act curtain went up on opening night of the production now running at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, a flagpole received a smattering of applause.

The Tony Award race for Best Musical of the 2012-2013 season was a hard-fought battle between Matilda and Kinky Boots. The most delightful musical of the season, though — and the one with the finest score — was the limited holiday engagement of A Christmas Story. The show arrived in November, received the most superlative reviews of the season (far cheerier than either Matilda or Kinky Boots), packed the folks in at the Lunt, and then departed as scheduled to make way for the incoming Motown. Had the theatre been available, A Christmas Story might have been able to extend well past its scheduled eight weeks. It’s a seasonal show, yes, but so are Annie and 1776.

When Madison Square Garden ended its holiday musical version of A Christmas Carol years ago, I couldn’t imagine another show equaling the joyfulness of that Broadway caliber production. Well we have one now! A Christmas Story, back in New York after last year’s triumphant Broadway outting, is every bit as warm, wonderful and entertaining!

The cavernous Theater at Madison Square Garden — a soulless hangar with awful acoustics — is a terrible place to see a show. And yet A Christmas Story — The Musical still works its magic there. That alone says a lot about how good it is. And while it would have been better to see the show on Broadway, where it opened last year, at least it’s back somewhere in the city, giving families a non-sappy option for holiday entertainment.

The holiday spirit is alive and well and living at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, where A Christmas Story, Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, and Joseph Robinette’s delightful musical inspired by the cult 1983 film of the same name, has returned to New York City for a three-week run. A 5,600-seat venue may seem like a dangerous choice for a show filled to the brim with small, distinctly human emotions, but not to worry. Director John Rando makes sure this warm, special piece isn’t swallowed up by its surroundings.
