Violet at City Center
Opening Night: July 18, 2013
Closing: July 18, 2013
Theater: New York City Center
Violet, Jeanine Tesori’s first musical, was one of the most acclaimed off-Broadway shows of the 1990s. Based on the short story “The Ugliest Pilgrim” by Doris Betts, the show follows a young woman who embarks on a religious pilgrimage in hopes of being healed of her disfiguring scar. This one-night-only concert starring Sutton Foster will showcase a gorgeous, energetic score filled with gospel, country, rock, rhythm and blues.

The concert revival, directed by Leigh Silverman, with exquisite musical supervision of a country-gospel ensemble and choir by Michael Rafter, doesn’t soften Violet’s rougher edges or disguise the racism of the hard-bitten, attitudes of working-class Southern culture during the civil rights era. Violet’s fellow bus riders come to life in tough, salty performances.
