In Obie Award-winning actress and playwright Heidi Schreck’s There Are No More Big Secrets, American expat Gabe hasn’t seen Charles and Maxine in years. When he returns to the United Stages with his Russian journalist wife Nina, and their daughter, he seeks refuge for his family in the home of his old friends. Inspired by Heidi’s own experience as a reporter in Siberia and St. Petersburg, There Are No More Big Secrets is a metaphysical examination of the limits of friendship.

The introduction of the supernatural doesn’t interrupt Heidi Schreck’s dining-room drama “There Are No More Big Secrets.” Talk of witches and spirits is woven into the fabric of the otherwise realistic world, which, like the plays of Annie Baker, whose “Circle Mirror Transformation” starred Ms. Schreck in a breakout role, includes lingering pauses between lovely bursts of offhand dialogue.

An American named Gabe (Adam Rothenberg) returns to his homeland after almost 20 years in Russia with his Russian wife Nina (Dagmara Dominczyk), a journalist whose reporting on the Chechen war has endangered their existence in Russia. Their safe haven is the home of his childhood friends, Charles (Gibson Frazier)) and Maxine (Christina Kirk), two married high school teachers.

There Are No More Big Secrets," by Heidi Schreck, isn’t the play it threatens to be — until it turns around and becomes exactly that kind of play. When two married schoolteachers offer refuge to an old friend and his Russian wife, there’s reason to think we’re in for another long, dull evening of marital stress and romantic recriminations. But these characters prove to be smart and thoughtful, and the adult issues that concern them have political gravity — until they regress in the second act and settle in for another long, dull evening of marital stress and romantic recriminations.

The husband-and-wife team of Heidi Schreck (playwright) and Kip Fagan (director) is behind "There Are No More Big Secrets," the latest offering from Rattlestick Playwrights Theater. Schreck, also an Obie-winning actor, has a gift for writing layered characters, and Fagan knows how to make the most of their interactions. Ultimately, though, this tale of an endangered Russian journalist and her American husband seeking refuge in rural New York with two of his former close friends, now married, never coheres.
