Macbeth – Theatre for a New Audience
Opening Night: March 12, 2011
Closing: April 22, 2011
Theater: Duke on 42nd Street
Director Arin Arbus returns to The Theatre for a New Audience production of Macbeth. For Arbus: "the genius of Macbeth has to do with the essential contradiction of its central character. Macbeth is capable of terrifying brutality, but his brutality is matched by the magnificence of his poetry. He manifests the worst in man and yet we see ourselves in him. His words strike us and we realize that we have him within us. Our own nature is to be feared- a terrifying experience."

See that big guy over there? Almost Herculean, isn’t he, with his sinewy arms and swelling chest, the kind of man you can easily imagine as a master of war and of women. But look again, closely. There’s doubt in his face, too, as if he were not always sure of what he’s doing or even who he is. I bet you this Hercules could crack. You sure wouldn’t want to fight him, but then you wouldn’t want him on your team, either.
