Evan Goldman has it all: He’s popular, has the “perfect” family and lives in the world’s greatest city — New York. When his parents get divorced, he’s forced to move with his Mom…to Indiana. Uprooted from his old life, he must maneuver his way through the minefield of high school to become part of the in crowd. 13 is a high-energy musical about growing up, dealing with change and learning that becoming who you want to be starts with discovering who you are.

Faithful readers will note that I’ve been doling out positive reviews left and right these days. That speaks to the general high quality of Broadway as of late; I cannot recall the last production I saw that wasn’t at least decent. In case anyone missed the lesson learned from "High School Musical" and its endlessly multiplying spawn, kids these days are quite comfortable watching their fictional counterparts burst into song to express their feelings. So the target audience for "13" should have no trouble identifying with the characters onstage as they tunefully reflect on friendship, crushes, popularity, acceptance and tongue action.

The attraction that premiered yesterday at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre is humorous and optimistic as its adolescents bounce along to a happy beat.
