This musical is based on the true story of what happened when sex columnist Dan Savage (played by Christopher Sieber) and his boyfriend decided to create a family. Step one: Convince an adoption agency and homeless teenage mom that two gay men are the perfect parents for her child. Step two: Convince themselves. This marks The New Group’s return to musical theater after producing Avenue Q, which received the Tony Award for Best New Musical in 2004.

Vibrators, leather bars and good old-fashioned sodomy have never looked more wholesome than they do in “The Kid,” the easygoing, sentimental new musical about a gay couple trying to adopt a baby. The homosexual partners at the center of this surprisingly unsurprising production, which opened Monday night on Theater Row, feel like truly ordinary people, folks you’ve met many times before in depictions of American spouses in pursuit of parenthood.

The terrific new musical The Kid, presented by The New Group at Theatre Row, is taken from an unlikely source: renowned sex advice columnist Dan Savage’s memoir of the same name about he and his partner’s attempt to adopt a baby. But thanks to the book by Michael Zam, consistently clever lyrics by Jack Lechner, music by Andy Monroe, and direction by Scott Elliott, the gamble more than pays off.

The Kid" is aimed at anyone who’s ever had a family, lost a family or craved one — which actually means just about all of us. The fact that it’s about two gay men attempting to adopt a baby from a homeless teenager doesn’t make it any less universal. In fact, it’s the details based on true events, that give this sweetly clever, somewhat sentimental love story its disarming appeal.

When I read Dan Savage’s The Kid: What Happened After My Boyfriend and I Decided to Go Get Pregnant, the last thing I ever thought would come of it was a musical. Told in Savage’s hilariously raunchy style, it’s a great read, and astonishingly moving in certain scenes. It’s one of those books that stays with you for months after you read it.
