iLuminate successfully combines the old and the new into a witty entertainment that is imaginative and exciting. Black light (UV) and LED technology, hip-hop dancing, graffiti and song all sweetly tell the story of a young artist striving in his art and in love.

A delight for both kids and adults, the clever and inventive entertainment iLuminate brings to mind the image of dancing graffiti. Wearing black body suits equipped with different colored neon lights, the performers move in darkness; all one sees are illuminations. Populated by fantastic creatures that dance, fly, fall to pieces and reassemble, the world that’s created is unique, fun and at times amazing.

iLuminate Artists of Light is a fun, language-free theatrical experience well on its way to becoming one of the great New York multidisciplinary mega hits. Like its beloved cousins Blue Man Group and Stomp, Artists of Light engages its willing audience through pumping music, visual tricks, and impressive choreography. The effect is an experience that is engrossing and appealing to everyone, from kiddos to grandparents.

If this eye-popping hour-long spectacle seems like an extended novelty act from America’s Got Talent, well, it kind of is. Creator Miral Kotb, a former software engineer, and her crew of glow-suited iLuminate dancers came in third place on the sixth season of that reality competition, which is a shame, since their high-tech show would probably play better in Las Vegas than Off Broadway. But while their storytelling skills are elusive, the incredibly agile performers have all the light moves, not to mention plenty of the F/X factor.

Before a recent performance of iLuminate, I felt like a schoolgirl who’d stolen an advance copy of the final exam. Having seen the show’s first version six months ago and read its publicity material, I knew what was going to unfold. Despite the title, other audience members might have remained unenlightened. Plotline and characters’ motivations don’t always emerge clearly. Not that it matters: iLuminate is more spectacle than story, with technology its most dazzling star.
