Since the dawn of time — well O.K., since the mid-’60s — gay men have been fiercely divided into love-her or hate-her camps by their feelings for Barbra Streisand. The intensity of those relationships is perhaps equaled by the subject’s self-regard, at least based on the evidence of her hilariously unnecessary 2010 coffee-table book, “My Passion for Design.”

Could there be a goofier job than playing the Mayor of Toontown at Disneyland? Well, yeah. That would be playing the faux proprietor of a faux mall of boutique shops that a lonely (bored?) superstar built to display her acquisitions in the basement of a barn on her Malibu estate. That’s the unkind but absolutely delicious premise of “Buyer & Cellar,” which came to Jonathan Tolins in a flash of inspiration when he got his hands on Barbra Streisand’s coffee-table extravaganza, “My Passion for Design.” Solo piece, lovingly played by “Ugly Betty” cutie Michael Urie, should thrive in this Off Broadway transfer.

In a season loaded with name stars giving solo (and almost solo) performances, it was quite an achievement for Michael Urie to nab the most recent Drama Desk Award as the best of the lot. Of course, playwright Jonathan Tolins deserves a big hunk of credit for his funny and outrageous fantasy disguised as a commentary on the cloistered lives of celebrities, Buyer And Cellar.

Three years ago, Barbra Streisand achieved a personal first: she published a book. “My Passion for Design,” with text and photos by its legendary author, was a lavish coffee table tome ($60 for the standard version; $500 for the signed-and-numbered deluxe edition) that showcased Streisand’s Malibu dream house.

“Buyer & Cellar” is a bracingly bright, one-man fantasia about truth, celebrity and the pursuit of utopia. Factor in a delectable star turn by “Ugly Betty” alum Michael Urie and this play deserves a hearty, “Hello, gorgeous.”
