The lyric beauties of the Italian opera at its height ring awfully tinny in “Golden Age,” the new play by Terrence McNally that opened on Tuesday night at City Center in a Manhattan Theater Club production. A cluttered backstage soap opera set in Paris on the first night of the last opera written by Vincenzo Bellini, the play mixes fact with fancy in trying to whip up a tempest of emotional conflict and artistic breast-baring.
