A friendly suburban barbecue spirals into a delirious, dangerous bacchanal in the superb play “Detroit,” by Lisa D’Amour, which sizzled open at Playwrights Horizons on Tuesday night. A sharp X-ray of the embattled American psyche as well as a smart, tart critique of the country’s fraying social fabric, Ms. D’Amour’s dark comedy is as rich and addictively satisfying as a five-layer dip served up with a brimming bowl of tortilla chips.

The title of Lisa D’Amour’s briskly funny but blurry dark comedy “Detroit” could be misleading. The play, a 2011 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, doesn’t take place in the Motor City. It unfolds in a “‘first-ring’ suburb outside of a midsize American city,” per a Playbill note. In other words, pretty much anywhere.

It is hardly news that Suburbia, U.S.A., is not what it used to be. After seeing Lisa D’Amour’s play Detroit, which opened last night at Playwrights Horizons, one may wonder whether there is any hope left for the old neighborhood.

Be very careful the next time you bring over a welcome basket to greet your new neighbors. In Lisa D’Amour’s comedic drama "Detroit," such a seemingly polite action leads to emotional turmoil and physical destruction. "Detroit," a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, was originally slated to play Broadway after its Chicago premiere. But after a successful London run, it is instead making its New York debut Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons.

If the last five years have taught us anything (and I don’t mean the Jason Robert Brown musical, which has taught us its own set of life lessons), it’s how easily – and quickly – the American Dream can go up in smoke. But in case you need a reminder, there’s Lisa D’Amour’s savvy, frequently poetic, and ultimately bittersweet play Detroit – a finalist for the 2011 Pulitzer Prize – now getting its New York premiere at Playwrights Horizons.
