Set 15 years after the Rwandan genocide, Children of Killers follows a group of teenage friends as many of their fathers are being released from prison where they have been serving time for their roles in the mass killings of their Tutsi neighbors. How are these innocents — young people who don’t even remember their fathers — going to live with their brutal legacy?

The teenage boys bouncing around the stage with a soccer ball could be from almost any American town. Wearing shorts and T-shirts — one has a flashy purple Kobe Bryant jersey — they burn with the energy of youth and trade talk of Jay-Z and Beyoncé.

Meantime, at the Castillo Theatre, “Children of Killers” by Katori Hall (“The Mountaintop”) tells another post-genocidal story — this one set in Rwanda.

The raucous teenagers onstage seem perfectly normal at first. They’re playing an exuberant game of soccer, laughing and joking and at one point stopping to dance to a Beyoncé song. One is even wearing a Lakers jersey.
