Casey Welch, the story goes, was a 16-year-old girl shot to death in a Nebraska cornfield by a 14-year-old boy named Bobbie Clearly.

Though she does not appear in the play named for her murderer, we come to know her better — through reminiscences, memorials and a startling impersonation — than we ever get to know Bobbie. As the play tracks his life for eight years, from his incarceration in a mental institution to his attempted return to the community, his motive remains obscure and his nature indecipherable.
