Faithful readers will note that I’ve been doling out positive reviews left and right these days. That speaks to the general high quality of Broadway as of late; I cannot recall the last production I saw that wasn’t at least decent. Yet, for all of my recent contentment, I’ve been waiting for one of those near-religious theatrical experiences—you know the kind I mean—where you can barely contain the ecstatic glee that is taking hold of your body, pushing you towards a breaking point where you want to stand up and shout “THIS SHOW IS AWESOME!!!” 13 is that show.

I can’t remember the last Broadway musical with a big Torah number. Then again, I can’t re member a leading man six years shy of legal drinking age. All that (and more) adds up to "13," the disarmingly charming new musical that opened last night.

In case anyone missed the lesson learned from "High School Musical" and its endlessly multiplying spawn, kids these days are quite comfortable watching their fictional counterparts burst into song to express their feelings. So the target audience for "13" should have no trouble identifying with the characters onstage as they tunefully reflect on friendship, crushes, popularity, acceptance and tongue action.
