Oh, the vulgarity, the venality, the small-minded nastiness of those loathsome souls now crowding the stage at the Duke on 42nd Street. But aren’t they delicious, every last rotten one of them?

There’s not a single person to root for in the Red Bull Theater’s production of “The Government Inspector,” Nikolai Gogol’s rollicking 19th-century satire of bad behavior in the Russian provinces. Yet the buoyant production that opened on Thursday night generates the kind of collective enthusiasm in its audience that you associate with home-team football games.
