In the play, retired New England professor Norman Thayer and his spirited wife Ethel decide to spend one final summer at their family’s lakeside cottage in Maine. En route to a European honeymoon, the couple’s estranged daughter Chelsea arrives to leave behind her fiancé’s troubled young son. Colliding generations soon forge common ground, but when Chelsea returns to discover Norman playing the father she never had, years of bitter memories and resentment rise to the surface. An intimate family drama laced with humor and heart, On Golden Pond explores growing up, growing old and growing closer.

No one can just say no like James Earl Jones. No, of course, is universally recognized as a small word of immense potential power. But you will not fully appreciate how affirmative a simple no can be until you hear Mr. Jones speak it – which he does again and again – in Leonard Foglia’s surprisingly fresh revival of Ernest Thompson’s "On Golden Pond," which opened last night at the Cort Theater, also starring Leslie Uggams.
