“Cockfight Play” is not the title of the terrific, tense little comedy by Mike Bartlett that opened on Thursday night at the Duke on 42nd Street. Its real name, which is only one syllable, is unprintable here, and “Cockfight Play” is being used in advertisements in family newspapers.

With the precious exception of literati like Oscar Wilde and his beloved Bosie, quarreling lovers are never as articulate and entertaining as they are in "Cock," Mike Bartlett’s provocatively titled play about a gay couple who split up when one of them falls for a woman. Wittily staged in a stylized cock-fighting ring, the contest for the narcissistic love object is a battle royal of wit and persuasion that only breaks down once it becomes obvious (if not to the loveblinded rivals) that this shallow boy isn’t worth all the angst.

There’s no question that Mike Bartlett’s Cock, now at The Duke on 42nd Street, has an attention-grabbing title. Fortunately, the play itself proves equally provocative, especially in James Macdonald’s extremely well-acted production.

A cockfight is a contest between two gamecocks, often conducted in a circular arena called a cockpit. That partially explains the wry title and unusual staging of Mike Bartlett’s edy play, "Cock," but of course, there’s more to it.
